York Day Three Tips: 33/1 Point can be the hot Stepper in Nunthorpe

Lewis Jones hit the crossbar yesterday at York with a close up second and a solid third place finish. He’s been there or thereabouts all week and his time will come. Hopefully today is that day as he offers up two selections from the Knavesmire…

The Nunthorpe is one of my favourite races of the entire season and today’s renewal looks a real deep affair. Sole Power has won his last two starts at the top level and was scintillating at Royal Ascot last time out, however, the last four runnings of this race include winners at 20-1, 40-1 and 100-1, which suggests that market leaders don’t get the run of things.

I’ll be taking him on at the head of the betting. The five furlongs at York is one of the quickest in the country and front runners usually have an added advantage here as their stamina can last out that little bit longer than elsewhere, as shown with Jwala and Margot Did, who both made all here in the last few years.

The horse I like at each-way prices is Stepper Point, who has progressed into a credible Group One sprint performer this season and finished second behind Sole Power in the Diamond Jubilee sprint.

FRIDAY’S TIP (YORK)

He has ferocious early pace and may get a couple of his more illustrious rivals at it from an early stage if on a going day. He ran much better than his finishing position of fourth suggested at Goodwood last time out behind Take Cover as jockey Martyn Dwyer decided to go it alone up against the stands rail.

That wasn’t the place to be that week and he plugged on very well to finish where he did. In a clean run race today, I can see him running a huge race and as long as the rain stays away, the 33/1 is absolutely massive. Get on with a three point each-way stake.

Glenard is also worth a small each-way investment in the Sky Bet Transfer Funds Stakes (1:55). He looked back in form when finishing half a length behind winner Hassle two starts ago in third and the leading three came well clear of their rivals. Charlie Hills’ runner then backed that up with a solid effort again at Ascot and looked the likely winner at one stage. Get on his chances with a one point each way stake.
