Kingman has been confirmed for today’s Sussex Stakes dual with Toronado after officials at Goodwood applied approximately 5mm of water to 80 per cent of the course, changing the going to nearer good than good-to-firm.
A new 5f course record time by Cotai Glory yesterday on very quick ground had resurfaced concerns about Kingman’s participation, but the adding of the water, whether right or wrong, will make sure we get the big clash on the Downs.
Kingman goes into the clash with the Richard Hannon runner as the warm favourite at 1/2 as his trainer John Gosden is in fine form at the moment and the way the horse won the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes was mighty impressive.
The Hannon team still remain bullish despite their horse trading at 7/2 with Richard Hannon giving Toronado “a great chance” of succeeding where former stable star Canford Cliffs failed against Frankel three years ago.
“They are two good horses and it’s going to be a very good race, but if ever we are to have a chance of beating Kingman it’s here at Goodwood, where he has the advantage of being proven on the course,” he said.
“He’s at least as good as he was when he came here last year, and probably better. He’s definitely stronger, and he has also toughened up mentally.”
Good luck if having a punt on the race. I will be watching rather than punting.
After yesterday’s non-runner hopefully we can get one to the track today.
Our selection today will be a familiar face to those that follow this column regularly as Cloudscape is given one more chance at 11/2 to show his true colours after making a big impression on us throughout the season. He runs in the Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes (2:30) and despite the competitive shape to the market, he’s worth chancing with each way stakes as the dead eight due to run.
Gosden’s charge was last seen finishing a staying on fourth in the King Edward V handicap at the Royal meeting and everything about his run suggested a step up in trip could be the making of this talented but frustrating horse. He hasn’t tasted victory since seeing off Windshear and subsequent Oaks third Volume at Newmarket earlier in the season but he’s still a horse to keep onside. Get on with two point each way stakes.
