Tuesday’s Racing Tips: Follow Sherwood & Aspell for profit at Wetherby

Oliver Sherwood may not be a trainer familiar to all racing fans, but in three weeks’ time at the Cheltenham Festival he has the opportunity to turn plenty of heads.

Sherwood heads to Prestbury Park with a couple of live chances, most notably with Deputy Dan in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle, as he bids for his seventh festival win.

His horses have been flying this season, especially when paired up with jockey Leighton Aspell. The pair have racked up a healthy strike-rate of 21% this season across all courses and an even better 50% when joining together at Wetherby, where Sherwood has sent a couple today.

Aspell is booked for both runners and the one we like at the prices is the lightly raced Fair Bramble, who goes in the EBF/TBA Mares´ Novices´ Handicap Chase at 2:15.

The mare is highly regarded by Sherwood and although she’s failed to win in nine starts, she is a model of consistency and is very capable of landing a race which would boost her value when she heads to the breeding stables.

After putting in some decent efforts over hurdles, including a close second behind Top Totti at Chepstow last season, Fair Bramble has stepped up since being switched to fences and has run with great credit in four handicaps.

The pick of the eight-year-olds form came at Exeter in December, where she jumped brilliantly from the front off a mark of 111 (11lbs wrong at the weights) and only went down by less than two lengths behind Midnight Lira.

She disappointed off a mark of 103 at Ascot last time, but that was a very good race for the grade and she is worth another chance off a mark of only 100 in this considerably weaker race.

Hidden Horizons is perhaps her biggest rival today but that horse doesn’t look particularly well handicapped and is very beatable. The 11/4 for the Sherwood runner looks very fair and punters should be lumping on with three point win stakes.
