Tuesday’s Racing Tip: Rick has the flair at Catterick

Red hot Lewis Jones tipped up a 9/2 winner yesterday with a 3pts win stake and his profit for the season is now comfortably in the green. If you had followed his selections with £10 per point, you’d now be sitting pretty with £50.72………

As predicted our only tip of the day yesterday, Relax, relished the heavy ground at Ffos Las and gave a strong front running performance to justify our faith that he was a well handicapped horse. The 9/2 we snapped up in the morning was a juicy bit of value and hopefully some of you got on in around that price.

Focus turns to Catterick today, and in all honesty it’s slim pickings in terms of locating some value. Not much stands out; however, small win stakes are advised on the chances of Rick in the Catterick Interactive Novices´ Limited Handicap Chase at 12:40.

The John Ferguson operation has a very encouraging strike-rate at Catterick, winning with four of his horses he has sent there in the last five years as it’s clear that the trainer doesn’t make the long journey north to Yorkshire without having something up his sleeve.

The nine-year-old was a very decent hurdler for Dessie Hughes before being transferred over to Ferguson’s yard, finishing a good sixth in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham in 2012 after racking up some good place finishes in Graded races in Ireland behind the likes of Mourad and subsequent World Hurdle runner-up Voler La Vedette.

The selection was a tad disappointing on his first two runs in the Bloomfield’s colours, finishing a beaten favourite in two novice chases when the form book suggested he was the one to beat. However, on both starts he looked as though a step up in trip would be a hugely positive move.

Although his two runs so far this year have been poor on the face of it, there were hints of ability in his last run at Wetherby, where he finished third behind two progressive chasers and he has been dropped 3lbs for that performance.

A repeat of that level of form would see him go close in a weaker event but Mandarin Sunset looks a big danger at the head of the market. Due to his claims, we’re only advising a 1pt win stake on the chances of Rick, who should be good enough to win a contest of this nature off his current mark. Take the 11/4.
