Tuesday’s Racing Tip: Hotgrove can be the top Boy at Ayr

Lewis Jones has his eye on a 5/2 shot at Ayr today as he looks to get back into the winners enclosure.

Hotgrove Boy may be a 21 race maiden but that shouldn’t put punters off having a stab at Stuart Coltherd’s charge in the 4:00 at Ayr, a winnable handicap if ever there was one.

This looks one of the weakest events of the day and the selection is the only horse in the field that has threatened to show a sprinkling of ability in his 21 runs to date.

Although his performance behind Proud Times at Catterick last time out didn’t exactly set the pulses racing or jump out of the form book at you, the strength of that race is far greater than the one Hotgrove Boy finds himself racing in today. If he repeats that showing today, then to my eye he should have too much in his locker for his rather mundane rivals.

Going back further, and there is more reasons to get stuck into the selection. Coltherd’s charge was booked for third behind two decent yardsticks in the form of Cheltenham Festival winning Holywell and David Pipe’s progressive Shotofvodka when crashing out two from home. His jumping held up very nicely that day in a very got race and it has to be a positive that he will jump the same fences at Ayr today.

Expect the selection to put his rivals jumping to the test from the front under young jockey Daragh Bourke, who is building quite a reputation for himself behind the scenes and is certainly a jockey to follow over the larger obstacles.

However, the champ AP McCoy is an interesting jockey booking for the Barry Murtagh-trained Forestside but like the selection he is also a maiden from 20 starts and he hasn’t shown much of a liking for the National Hunt game in recent months.

Soul Angel is down to a career-low mark but is so out form it’s scary while Too Cool To Fool isn’t likely to stay on in this heavy ground.

The safe option looks to be with the favourite, who has seen money this morning, and our advice is to get on at 5/2 with a two point win stake.

Good luck, comrades.
