The Betfair Sportsbook is paying extra places today!

In the opening 13:00 at Pontefract, trainer Harry Dunlop has had just two runners at this venue in his career scoring with one (50%) and today sends Maketh Believeth 3.55/2 his only runner of the day.

In the 14:40 at Pontefract, trainer Tim Easterby will be looking for his fifth win in the race in the last ten years. He saddles Fishable 13.012/1.

In the 15:15 at Pontefract, trainer Richard Fahey will look for his sixth win in the race with Buckshaw Village 8.07/1.

In the 15:50 at Pontefract, the well-bred King Eagle 5.59/2 was an eye-catcher at Nottingham on debut last term and could take a big step forward today just as his half brother Magical Morning did on his first start as a three-year-old – one to watch.

In the 14:25 at Exeter, Harry Fry’s Get Back Get Back 2.111/10, has finished second in four of his last five starts and looks to have found an opportunity to get back to winning ways off a short break returned to good to firm ground with his trainer 30% here.

In the 16:50 at Exeter, the once-promising Danny Whizzbang 11.010/1 now finds himself into a Class 4 for the first time in his career and returns to the scene of his Novice Hurdle win in 2019.

In the 16:35 at Southwell, Head Law 1.75/7 is surprisingly turned out quickly by connections as he bids for back to back wins under a penalty.

Horses for courses

This section highlights the best bets from horses that have won twice or more at today’s tracks.

13:40 Southwell – William Of Orange – Has won here twice (100%)
13:40 Southwell – Ecossais – Has won here three times (75%)
13:40 Southwell – Debden Bank – Has won here twice (40%)

Weighted to go well

“Weighted to go well” highlights horses running that are more than 10lbs below their last winning handicap mark.

13:40 Southwell – Locks Corner – Has won off 140 runs off 115

Furthest traveller

Today’s furthest traveller is trainer Daniel Steele, who made the 233-mile journey to Pontefract for his sole runner of the day, Racing Country 34.033/1 in the 14:40.

Race of the day

We take a quick look at the 14:40 at Pontefract today which looks highly competitive and could prove informative going into the flat season with plenty of these open to further improvement.

SBK11/4

EXC3.85

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Jockey: Robert Havlin
Age: 4
Weight: 9st 1lbs
OR: 92

Peter The Great saw his limitations exposed when fifth on his final start as a three-year-old last season, and today makes his return to the track on the back of a 270-day break for a team that won this with a similar type last term.

Still, his effort in defeat at the back end of last year has seen the winner and runner up score in Group company but the third well beaten by today’s rival Injazati next time out.

He has time on his side and is highly likely to have trained on given the physical scope he offered when last seen, and this mark of 92 should not prove beyond him on the balance of his form.

SBK5/4

EXC2.46

Trainer: Charlie Fellowes
Jockey: James Doyle
Age: 4
Weight: 9st 7lbs
OR: 98

Injazati did nothing but improve last term and is another that ended his campaign in defeat, albeit over a trip that likely stretched his stamina. He should enjoy today’s soft ground and has very few negatives to his chances, but the niggle is that he did improve with racing last season and could prove all the better with this under his belt?

SBK28/1

EXC36

Trainer: Stuart Williams
Jockey: Marco Ghiani
Age: 6
Weight: 9st 5lbs
OR: 96

Rhythmic Intent was frustrating to back last season, and today’s trip could prove on the short side, yet the soft ground may compensate for that with form figures of 212 over this distance when soft is in the going description.

He is no back number and could be the each-way play at a price for punters struggling to split the two at the top of the market.

Big race verdict

Typically a number of these have been underestimated for the unexposed sexy profiled horses, and value is wearing thin at the time of writing. It could pay to have a small each-way play on the recently gelded Rhythmic Intent, who goes well fresh and will be finishing strongly over this trip. The Betfair Sportsbook are paying four places, I am happy to take a chance.

Timeform hoping pocket rocket can lead the way at Pontefract

Timeform’s Tony McFadden highlights a NAP, Next Best and Each-Way selection at Pontefract on Tuesday.

Three for Aintree

With Aintree fast approaching, Daryl Carter highlights three horses to keep on side this week and says back one of them now…

Final Word

First off, apologies for no Daily News column yesterday, I am not very well, and it’s nothing to do with the recent stag do from which I retreated home early on Saturday afternoon! I hope it’s not a dreaded second batch of Covid because it feels very much the same, and nothing else has kept me sleeping for upwards of 17 hours in the last year.Today, I came close to backing a few horses, Nicklesonthedime at Exeter, Danny Whizzbang at Exeter, but neither filled me with confidence to put on the column after a second look so I was left with a small each-way bet on Rhythmic Intent at 25’s.Sometimes as a punter, you get days like this where you find half bets, as I like to call them. These are the ones that tend to cost you a fair few quid in the long run. It usually pays to let the bets find you on days like this instead of trying to fish with dynamite, and with Aintree is just around the corner, I am happy to sit back and be patient.Until tomorrow, be lucky.Follow Daryl Carter on Twitter @DarylCarter7
