Trainer Donald McCain has a 20% strike rate at Doncaster this season, and he saddles Cartonne 3.55/2 in the opening 13:42 Novices’ Hurdle. He also partners with Brian Hughes, and the pair have had a 35% strike rate together in the last 21 days.

Jockey Alain Cawley is showing a profit of GBP109 to a GBP1 level stake this season but is searching for his first Doncaster winner with a record of zero for 29. He takes the ride on Geryville 3.55/2 in the 14:50.

Paul Nicholls’ Soldier Of Love 6.511/2 needs to finish in the first two today in the 16:35 at Doncaster to qualify for the Hunters Chase at Cheltenham, but the forecast going conditions are firmly against him.

Trainer Colin Tizzard and 16-year-old Grandson and jockey Frederick Gingell have scored twice from three runs when partnering 66%. Today they partner up with Slate House 5.04/1 in the 15:35 at Ludlow.

Whastupwithyou 8.07/1 drops into a class 4 handicap for the first time in his career in the 16:10 at Ludlow and is equipped with first-time cheek-pieces for Ben Pauling. Three miles certainly stretched him the last twice, and the drop back in trip today to 2m4f is a positive to his chances.

Trainer Philip Hobbs has a 21% strike rate over hurdles at Ludlow. His runner Pulling Stamps 2.89/5 in the 17:20 Maiden Hurdle can get off the mark at the third attempt.

At Kempton, jockey Rob Hornby has a 67% strike rate when riding for Amanda Perrett. Today they partner with Sayifyouwill 7.06/1 in the 18:30.

Trainer William Haggas has a 36% strike rate with his three-year-olds at Newcastle. Today he sends Canonized 2.47/5 in the 14:35.

Today’s furthest traveller is trainer Neil Mullholland who sends one runner to Newcastle. The trainer has made the 299-mile journey to Newcastle with Vis A Vis 3.55/2 in the 13:30.

Race of the day

Today, we head back over the sticks for the Veterans’ Chase at Doncaster at 15:25. Ten-year-olds have won five of the last six, and the one they didn’t, a ten-year-old finished second by a neck. There are two of this age group in today’s contest.

No. 4

Chirico Vallis (Fr)
SBK11/4EXC4.3Trainer: Neil Mulholland
Jockey: Richie McLernon
Age: 10
Weight: 10st 13lbs
OR: 135
The first of those is Chirico Vallis, who had run with extreme credit this season, including a well-beaten third when he shaped like a non-stayer at Warwick last time over 3m5f.All of his victories over fences have come when making all of the runnings, and he may get a lead in today’s contest with his fluent jumping likely to see of Black Op and Dingo Dollar in the early stages. He figures on a handy mark on the balance of his form, and the drop back to 3m today is a big plus. He is unexposed over this distance, and this is easier than his latest assignment.

No. 5

Belami Des Pictons (Fr)
SBK13/8EXC2.84Trainer: Venetia Williams
Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
Age: 11
Weight: 10st 12lbs
OR: 134
Belami Des Pictons heads the market after an encouraging second in testing conditions at Exeter ten days ago and must be a player if this doesn’t come too soon. His profile is solid rather than progressive, but it would be no surprise to see him take a step forward today still Exeter’s outing must have left an effect, and this quick turnaround is not ideal.

No. 3

Black Op (Ire)
SBK16/1EXC17.5Trainer: Tom George
Jockey: Ciaran Gethings
Age: 11
Weight: 11st 3lbs
OR: 139
It would take a leap of faith to back Black Op, but he does at least return to the scene of his Maiden Hurdle victory in 2018, and he has fallen a long way in the weights. He is yet to win over this distance outside of his point to point run, and the eleven-year-old needs to raise his game to get involved, although he may just be on the downgrade after a glowing career.Big race verdict

There’s not much to be optimistic about in this contest for most other than Chirico Vallis, who arrives here on the up and steps into Veteran’s company for the first time. He should be able to take advantage of the favourite’s quick turnaround and put him to the sword on the front end off this workable handicap mark back over a more suitable trip. Dingo Dollar, the other ten-year-old, is of interest, but he is weighted to his best.

Final Word – Cheltenham experience

Day one and two are done and dusted, and you find yourself now fully emerged in the Festival thinking I’ve had enough of this already or, bring on today and Friday.

Still, if you think you’ve had enough, know you won’t be the only one in the same position as the first day is always challenging and the second usually brings some short-priced favourites.

The Thursday is about boosting the morale to get you through the mammoth excursions of the week, and this day can yield plenty of rewards. The Stayer’s Hurdle is wide open, and there are some good handicaps as well as the unpredictable Mare’s Novice Hurdle in which races will offer decent odds about many.

Bookmakers, by this point, are also looking at their books to see how they have done, and if they are in front, you will see that reflected in the prices about the favourites on Thursday.

As a punter, this is the day you want to be well on your way to making it pay – no one wants to be waiting for the Friday!

Thursday is also a day to enjoy all the Cheltenham races’ facilities. Come Friday, it will be jam-packed, and Thursday is usually the quieter of the four in my experience despite it being St Patrick’s day.

Until tomorrow, be lucky.
