Race of the day
We head to Newbury today for their very tricky 14:25 Handicap Hurdle, where 13 relatively unexposed horses head to post in a race that has seen the last four favourites oblige, suggesting it’s not as daunting as it first looks for punters.
Fine Casting heads the market but has been uneasy this morning out from 3.02/1 out to 3.55/2, but he has a steadily progressive profile and represents last years best of the British bumper form.
He has a course win here in a bumper and arrives on the back of a heavy ground Ffos Las win when making all the running and today makes his handicap debut off an opening mark of 114.
On balance, his handicap mark looks workable, but it remains to be seen if his future lies over further with this 2m trip on drying ground likely to prove a sharp enough test for him.
He has likeable claims and has the right profile for this race, but he may prove vulnerable to something with a bit more speed.
Chanceux arrives in search of a three-timer on handicap debut but has left nothing in the dark for the assessor, and it would be a surprise should he be miles ahead of his handicap mark of 116 on the balance of his form to date.
However, he comes here in good heart, and he is on the upgrade. He’s been seen to best effect on the front end, and while his jumping to the right at Plumpton was a concern, it didn’t stop him from running out a ready winner.
His trainer is zero for seven at this venue over hurdles and he could just find something better handicapped.
Mascat is an 87 rated flat horse that ran as well as can be expected under a penalty when finding 2m4f stretching his stamina at Wincanton behind a very smart improver. Today’s drop back in trip on drying ground should see more of a speed test play to his strengths.
He is another handicap debutant, and on his flat form, this opening mark of 113 looks very lenient. He will need to improve on his hurdle form, but he won as he liked on his debut at Wincanton and the talented Thomas Doggrell claims a further seven pounds off his back.
He is open to improvement, and this bigger field stronger-paced scenario should suit him.
Big race verdict
There’s plenty to like right down to the outsider of the field Canford Light should he brush up his jumping but MASCAT could prove very well treated off this opening mark on just his second start over 2m. He looks a good each-way bet at the morning odds and is worth a play. Sheldon is always well supported but has failed to deliver on numerous occasions now, and patience is wearing thin, but he has the form in the book to play a significant role.

Benny to bounce back at Newbury
Benny’s Bridge caught the eye on chase debut at Doncaster last month despite being keen in the early stages and making a bad blunder at the rear of the field when attempting to make his challenge. He can maintain Samuel Drinkwater’s 100% chase record in the 13:50 Handicap Chase.
Benny’s Bridge is entitled to improve for that run and sits on a very workable handicap mark of 122 after being rated as high as 137 over hurdles last term. He has taken a few runs to really get going this season, but he has been brought along steadily and gave the firm impression that he is ready to strike when third behind this columns winner Thyme White on his latest outing.
That form ties in with today’s odds-on favourite, so Amarillo Sky must be respected, but the value play is with Benny, especially with a strong pace on offer and with improvement expected.
Finally, we have some decent action to get our teeth stuck into today at Newbury. It’s felt like a slow month in racing, with it hard to be enthusiastic about the mid-week stuff, but things should start picking up towards the end of the month.
No complaints from me today, so until tomorrow, be lucky!
