What a way to start 2014. We hit the jackpot yesterday at Cheltenham when our only selection of the day Mendip Express (2pt win) duly dotted up at 7/1 to boost out profit and loss record firmly into the green. We have now raked in over £16 of profit from all our selections since we began this column at the start of November.
Harry Fry’s charge looks a real prospect to keep on side of with the Cheltenham Festival in mind as the trainer has high hopes of a bold showing in either in the RSA Chase or the four mile National Hunt Chase run on the Wednesday.
Onto today, and we have one horse on our radar at Huntingdon. Beauboreen goes in the 32Red Handicap Hurdle at 2:10 and should take all the beating around the 5/2 mark.
Jennie Candlish’s young stable star is certainly going the right way after showing significant improvement from his wobbly runs in handicap hurdles last season.
The strong stayer returned from a seven month break to land a contest at Carlisle in gutsy fashion on bottomless ground before improving again to finish a close second behind the very well handicapped Alderney Rover despite being bumped up a harsh looking 7lbs in the handicap.
He came out of that contest with plenty of admiration from these quarters as the winner looks a very nice type capable of reaching the top level in handicap company and Beauboreen would have given him a closer race if he didn’t completely get the last flight wrong.
That was only the seven-year-olds first try at three miles and as expected he was suited supremely well to a slug-fest in the mud over the marathon trips and should get similar conditions today at Huntingdon as the rain hasn’t stopped falling in that part of the UK since New Year’s Day morning.
This is by means likely to be one way traffic though as a few of these line up on a decent mark, none more so than the veteran Arkose, who has ran two blinding races in defeat this season and should be the one to give our boy the most to think about. Saying that, at odds-against prices, Beauboreen is the clear bet and should be lumped on with a four point win stake.
