I was planning on penning another Royal Ascot ante post piece today but after breezing over the form at Newbury, a horse that’s in my tracker looks to have sound claims today in the Lord Weinstock Memorial Stakes (3:25).
Belle De Lawers is a filly that should make up into a decent Group performer this season judging on her first two efforts and although she’s a shorter price that what was available on first show, she is worth a small win investment at 3/1.
I’m not that comfortable tipping these kinds of prices in eight/nine runner fields as there is certainly value to be had somewhere in the each-way market but such is the strength of her chance added to the fact the two market leaders are very beatable, I’m going to allow myself a dabble at a 3/1 chance today with small stakes.
The selection is a filly that has really come from nowhere for trainer James Bethall. She won on her debut in fine style at 50/1, pulling clear of a decent field in a very respectable time.
That was over a mile at Haydock and her run style (powered clear at the finish after taking a while to pick up) suggested that a step up in trip will only see her in a better light.
That theory was also on show when she finished a staying on fifth in a Listed event at York behind Lustrous. The race turned into a bit of a dash for home but despite being at the back of the field, Belle De Lawers made up significant ground in the final 200 yards to close on the leaders.
That proved she is to be taken seriously at this level and today’s step up in trip is one she will relish.
I do like having a play on classy horses trained by a smaller trainer as the market does overreact to the name of the trainer in terms of value. You can all-but guarantee that this horse would arguably be favourite if trained by Sir Michael Stoute or William Haggas but we can get 3/1 for our money here.
Market rivals Jordan Princess and Eastern Belle have the scope to be classy at this level but I was very disappointed with Jordan Princess last time out and I’m not convinced she wants to go this far while Eastern Belle is game but is still a maiden after four starts.
Get on Belle De Lawers with a one point win.
