It was one of those frustrating days yesterday that now and again come around in all-weather racing…..
Our selection Dubai Hills, almost as soon as I published the piece, took a huge drift in the market as the money came in for Frontier Fighter, who was trained by the same trainer David O’Meara.
Obviously, O’Meara had a fair idea of what horse was likely to run his race with perhaps the fact that the previously unbeaten Dubai Hills hadn’t run in four months proving the decisive factor. The money came for Frontier Fighter and he duly dotted up under Danny Tudhope.
Apologies to anyone that got on Dubai Hills but my hands were tied with that one.
Let’s hope there’s more positive news to report regarding my only selection at Southwell today.
It’s very hard to see Alpha Tauri finishing out of the first three in the Best Odds At bookmakers.co.uk Handicap and at 11/2 he’s well worth lumping on with each-way stakes.
This speedy customer has all the attributes to be a solid performer over five furlongs at the track and it’s surprising he’s never raced over this trip on the Fibresand.
Richard Guest’s charge has been a model of consistency since the turn of the year, running with real credit on all his starts over six and seven furlongs at Southwell.
He’s finished second twice after showing great speed from the gates and on both occasions was just outstayed in the closing stages which bodes well for this step back in trip.
Six wins on his Southwell CV is also a strong pointer towards his chances of going close off only a 1lb higher mark than he last won a Southwell handicap off.
Looking through his opposition, there isn’t much to really challenge him from a place perspective. A dead eight are set to go to post, which means three places will be paid past the post and you can all-but rule out three of those eight from hitting the frame.
There are some decent challengers towards the top of the market, especially the very effective Shawkantango, but he’s getting rather high in weights now and has never really convinced in handicaps that he’s a sound betting proposition.
Derek Shaw’s animal also has a tendency to get behind in his races which is never a good sign at Southwell.
At 11/2 Alpha Tauri looks a very strong each-way bet. Get on with four points each way stakes. It’s a biggie this one.
