Sunday’s Racing Tips: 7/2 Science to show Pure class at Towcester

Lewis Jones hopefully won’t be screaming WTF after STD and NTD pair up with a well-fancied runner at Towcester today. He seems very confident of a strong showing from a horse that finished sixth in the Cheltenham Bumper last season but has yet to fire since switching to hurdles…

Pure Science is a horse that we’re certain will prove better than his current mark in time and although this recommendation has an air of being a bit of a “cliff-like selection”, he’s very much worth following with confidence in the Free Tips Every Day At Handicap Hurdle at Towcester (2:10).

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ youngster was part of our ten to follow at the start of the season after running what we felt was a very encouraging sixth place finish in the Champion Bumper last season. Things haven’t gone exactly to plan though. Four runs over hurdles later and the horse has been beaten soundly on each occasion and is rated a lowly 123.

It’s safe to say the six-year-old hasn’t gone forward from his progressive days in bumper races but on three of his starts he was pitched in at the deep end and judging by his handicap debut has now found his level. Last time out at Chepstow, he shaped with significant promise to finish fourth on his first try at three miles.

Sam Twiston-Davies changed the tactics on Pure Science and rode him quietly into contention from the back of the field in what was a strongly run race.

This suited the strong travelling horse, whose best efforts in bumpers came when the pace was strong and he could be cajoled into the action late on.

His effort at Chepstow petered out in the tough conditions as he clearly didn’t fully stay the trip but the decision by the Twiston-Davies team to drop him back in trip to 2m5f today looks a stroke of genius.

The race itself isn’t the most competitive with an array of horse seemingly struggling for form and don’t seem to have much in hand on the handicapper. Pure Science is full of potential off a mark of 123 and definitely hasn’t shown the assessors the true capabilities as a hurdler.

We’re not holding back today, its bets like these that need to be attacked with bulky stakes. Get on with a four point win at 7/2.
