The powerhouse that is Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh will be reunited at Leopardstown today as Tidal Bay, at the grand old age of 13, bids for yet more Grade One glory in the Hennessy Gold Cup.
We’re confident that the Walsh can work his magic on the unique veteran and at 3/1 he rates as best bet material for today.
This is far from the strongest renewal of the Hennessy and with a strong pace likely to be forced by Roi De Me, Tidal Bay’s hold up style of racing will come to the fore.
He ran a belter off a monster weight in the Welsh National and on that form he’ll be able to repel both First Lieutenant, who won’t relish the ground, and Last Instalment. The former has plenty of ability and is a big danger if finding his his true form but he’s been plagued with injury problems since being a top-class novice. Get on with a four point win stake.
Meanwhile, and Saturday’s action only further enhanced the buzz for this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
Cheltenham contenders for some of the most prestigious races were on show at Warwick and Newbury and some of them enhanced their claims but in truth it was a day where plenty of bubbles were burst.
One of Paul Nicholls’ Gold Cup hopes Al Ferof disappointed in the Denman Chase as our Gold Cup ante post tip Harry Topper finally delivered a performance that the markets had to take seriously. He revelled in the deep conditions and powered clear by a wide margin. The 50/1’s are all gone for Cheltenham and he’s now a 20/1 chance.
Dodging Bullets was another of the Nicholls string to be stung. He ran far better than Al Ferof in the two miler but couldn’t find a way past Module. The Arkle contender drifted a little in the market to 11/2.
The biggest market springer of the day was Smad Place, who landed a very good renewal of the three mile novice chase. Alan King’s charge looks a proper RSA Chase type and was cut to 6/1 following the impressive victory.
