Sunday’s Racing Tip: Lady Gibraltar the relish the layout at Brighton

No luck yesterday for Lewis Jones and his 33/1 shot as Lily Rules ran another pretty mediocre race at Sandown. It’s been a slow week in terms of winners following last Friday’s profit bonanza but you sense a winner is close. Let’s see what Lewis is backing today….

Lady Gibraltar is a horse that relishes a tight track and she is taken to win the Handicap on her first start at Brighton, a track which is very similar to Goodwood and Lingfield where she has won before.

Her form hasn’t been great this season, but she looked like returning to somewhere near her best when running a much better race in the void race at Epsom on bank holiday Monday. Tim Jarvis’ mare was bang there for almost all of the race before fading in the final strides. Her mark has now dropped 2lbs lower than her last win when she romped clear with a very good handicap at Goodwood in the summer of 2012.

That performance was a huge effort and showcased her ability. If she can build on her last run, then the 8/1 with each way stakes could be a huge betting proposistion. If I was a bookmaker I wouldn’t want to lay much of the 8/1, which is a good sign in terms of finding a decent wager.

Get on her chances with a two point each way stake.

Meanwhile, John Gosden continues to exploit the French race angle this season and Greatwood will look to add to that record this afternoon. Kingman, Western Hymn and Gregorian have all triumphed for Gosden across the channel as has Gatewood himself, who won the Prix de Reux three weeks ago, and he’s back for more in the Grand Prix de Deauville Lucien Barriere at 2:40 at Deauville.

Gatewood was in command from some way out three weeks ago under William Buick when beating Rio Tigre and Going Somewhere. Andre Fabre, who has steered a wide berth of Deauville with his best horses during this wettest of Augusts, has been bringing Rio Tigre along steadily. Further improvement can be expected, although the trainer may believe his future lays over further, given his Pattern entries over a mile and seven furlongs.

Going Somewhere has a 5lb pull in the weights with Gatewood for a near four-length defeat and should be on the premises once again but this race should go the way of Gatewood.
