Sunday’s Racing Tip: 15/2 Monkerty Tunkerty an each-way steal in Sussex National

Rather unexpectedly, Plumpton has passed an inspection on Sunday morning and racing, featuring the Sussex National, goes ahead on heavy going and we have a mustered up a tip for the big race after sitting out Saturday’s woeful array of all-weather racing.

Clerk of the course Mark Cornford has admitted there is no getting away from the fact that the ground will be absolutely bottomless and punters should be favouring horses heavily that have previous strong form on heavy ground.

The each way possibilities in the Sussex National, which is run over 3m5f, are huge with just nine horses declared and bookmakers set to pay out on the first three past the post. That’s where our focus lies in trying to nick a bit of value.

Finding a horse that is guaranteed to stay in this ground is favoured over rather than concentrating too much on handicap marks and that’s why despite carrying top-weight, we are very much in the Monkerty Tunkerty camp, who looks a stonking each-way bet around the 15/2 mark.

The 11-year-old belies his years as a veteran as he’s only had 10 chase starts in a very lightly raced career and judging by his reappearance at Sandown, he could have another fruitful season.

He won staying handicap chases at Wincanton and Doncaster last season, one of which was achieved in similar ground to today.

Quite surprisingly, he has dropped back to a mark of 129, the same mark when he landed the spoils at Doncaster.

His run at Sandown should have put him spot on for this contest. Jumping with his usual sharpness, Jessica Westwood’s apple of her eye was in the box seat for a long way at Sandown but just couldn’t quicken as well as his rivals in the last quarter of a circuit.

However, despite being caught for toe, he stayed on very well in the final four furlongs to finish a creditable fourth behind Fine Parchment and was only beaten six lengths in the end.

It was the perfect trial for a race of this nature that does lack a classy sort like the selection and he looks the one to rely on from an each way perspective, especially at 15/2.

The big boys are out for this one and we’re plumping for a three point each way advised stake size. Good luck, comrades.
