Saturday’s Racing Tips: Split stakes on Dell’ Arca & Totalize in Betfair

The Betfair Hurdle at Newbury is one of the highlights in the calendar for value seeking handicap merchants and tipster Lewis Jones is advising two win selections in this year’s renewal, which is due to be run on, yep, you’ve guessed it, heavy ground at 3:35 this afternoon….

It certainly pays to follow the fancied horses at the top of the market in the Betfair Hurdle judging by recent renewals. Only three of the last 12 winners could be found outside the top five in the betting.

The market is admittedly very congested at the top with now real clear favourite dominating proceedings. But the key to finding the winner of this year’s renewal will be finding a horse that will relish a slog in the mud but one that is also progressing through the ranks and has yet to show the handicapper his hand.

Also, it seems that being a five-year-old gives you a big advantage in this lucrative contest. The overall performance of five-year-olds since 1995 has meant it’s hard to make a case for any other age group. Of the 55 horses that have placed in the race, 27 of those were five-year-old.

So, with those three variables at the forefront of our mind, we’re plumping for two horses that fit that criteria and instead of recommending one horse each way, we’re advising two straight win bets on the two chosen horses in question.

Our first selection is Dell’ Arca, who will bid to become handicap guru David Pipe’s first ever winner of this race. The French recruit arrived at the yard with a big reputation and price tag and has run two impressive races thus far. He won the Greatwood Hurdle in gutsy fashion before unseating in the Ladbroke when travelling well. At 8/1, Pipe’s charge is well worth some pennies. Two point win.

The other progressive five-year-old we like at the prices is Totalize, who can be backed at a whopping 16/1. Brian Ellison’s youngster loves big field handicaps and is most certainly better than his current mark of 129. Get on with a one point win stake.
