If you can’t get excited about today’s action from Newbury and Ayr, then you may as well come to a conclusion that horse racing isn’t for you. Today is a belter with the Greenham Stakes from Newbury and the Scottish Grand National the standout race from Ayr. Lewis Jones has one bet from Ayr….
My first focus surrounds the action at Ayr and I’m very keen to take on My Tent Or Yours off top-weight in the QTS Scottish Champion Hurdle at 2:40. Nicky Henderson’s star hurdler is a top-class animal but to win off top-weight you need to have plenty of guts to go with your ability. To my eyes, we’ve seen on many occasions that the classy customer doesn’t possess the will to win required to win big races.
He’s been beaten twice by short margins at the Cheltenham Festival and I can see him doing the same today in a field that has a couple of in-form horses among it.
The one I like at the each-way prices is Clever Cookie at a juicy 12/1. Put simply, if this horse was trained by Paul Nicholls or Nicky Henderson he would be a strong second favourite behind My Tent Or Yours looking at what he’s achieved over the last three months. However, the selection is trained by Peter Niven, a small trainer who’s only had 12 winners in the last three seasons. That must be having an effect on his price as on form this lad is no double figure shot.
The six-year-old has progressed through the handicaps like a very good horse capable of making a splash at Graded level and a mark of 144 may not be able to stop him today.
He was last seen winning in classy fashion in a Grade Two at Kelso, where he could be called the winner half a mile from home out, but before that he had won twice at Musselburgh with similar authority.
Further improvement is needed today but at the prices, I’m more than happy to risk that with 12/1 available with Sportingbet, especially with My Tent Or Yours very beatable at the head of the betting.
Get on his chances with a two point each way stake.
Meanwhile, we’ll be watching the Greenham very closely from Newbury as Berkshire, our ante-post fancy for the 2000 Guineas, makes his seasonal reappearance. At 9/1 he was very tempting to put up as an official selection today but he may not quite be at full tilt with Newmarket in mind. He should be there or thereabouts, however.
