Royal Ascot Day Four tips: Mohican to strike First in Wolferton

Lewis Jones has dug deep into the form book for Royal Ascot’s fourth day and has come out the other side with two selections…

The Queen was oh so close to recording another win the Gold Cup yesterday with Leading Light just getting the better of an epic dual and a narrow defeat may go the same way for her Bold Sniper in the Wolferton Handicap (3.05).

Sir Michael Stoute’s charge will be absolutely primed to run a huge race today at the Royal meeting but at 7/4 I’m more than willing to take him on.

Second favourite Café Society isn’t a horse with the right winning profile for this race despite getting his ground and my focus is on a bigger price with my each-way goggles on.

First Mohican was once rated a potential Derby winner by the late great Sir Henry Cecil before he suffered a serious leg injury as a two-year-old. Rumours are that Frankel was his 2000 Guineas winner and First Mohican would win the Epsom showpiece.

FRIDAY’S TIP (ROYAL ASCOT)

His career has got back on track to a certain extent after a frustrating period on the sidelines, progressing to a mark of 105 with an eye catching 10-furlong handicap win at York and a very strong effort behind Mount Athos in a Listed race at Newbury. He has bags of potential and ability still and may just have his optimum conditions today in the Wolferton.

The ground will be to his liking, as will the trip, and Richard Hughes is the perfect man to ride him. His handicap mark is the only negative on his CV with his mark looking pretty stiff. However, at 16/1 he’s worth chancing in with one point each-way stakes.

The three-year-old fillies generation is lacking a true superstar this season and they all have the ability or make up to beat each other when on a going day. With that in mind, the Coronation Stakes (4.25) is a real tough race with any of the runners capable of running well.

My Titania is the obvious place to start as she has been highly rated by John Oxx. Her comfortable win in a Group 3 at the Curragh last year has been franked and she must have a decent chance. At 100/30 she is the one that could be on a different level to this lot. Get on with two point win stakes.
