The nature of the sprint division at the top level seems to lend itself to a mixture of results. There is little between the top-class speedballs and it usually comes down to who is at the top of their game on the day or maybe a liking for the track.
Sole Power and Slade Power come into the July Cup (3:50) as recent Royal Ascot winners but despite their impressive performances both are best swerved as race conditions will be very different at Newmarket compared to Ascot. In all likelihood, with the way the ground is going, Sole Power won’t even run, so Eddie Lynham will just be relying on Slade Power to do the business.
The one to back with each-way stakes is Hot Streak, who is available to back at double figure prices. Kevin Ryan has been very open regarding the high esteem he holds the horse in and I’m expecting a big improvement from his rather one-paced showing in the King Stand’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. All of his best form has come on a soft surface and with the ground likely to be good or softer, at 12/1 he is hard to dismiss from the frame.
Another horse to follow with small each-way stakes is Golden Town in the Spa At Bedford Lodge Hotel Mile Stakes (2:10). We were all over this horse for a handicap on 2000 Guineas day at Newmarket earlier this season but he threw his chances away by racing free and then, not for the first time, lugging his head to one side. Since then, he has been gelded and wears a visor for the first time. He’s got bags of talent and is one to certainly watch out for in an open race around the 9/1 mark.
Kingsgate Native has plenty going for him in the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes and is taken to snap a losing run that stretches back to May last year. When everything falls right for this experienced sprinter, who once upon a time won the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old, he is serious player at this level. He’s been running well without winning this season and his best piece of form when second to Sole Power at Newmarket looks very strong in regards to this race. He won’t be much of a price, probably around the 2/1 mark, but he’s going to be hard to stop if on a going day.
