Lewis Jones runs his talented eye over the runners and riders for Friday’s feature at Newmarket. The Falmouth Stakes is always seen as one of the July course’s most iconic races and this year’s renewal has an intriguing betting make-up to it….
Integral – Best Price 6/4
The improvement shown by Sir Michael Stoute’s filly at Royal Ascot when romping away with the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes is again testament to her trainer’s ability to eek out improvement as the season wares on. She reversed the form conclusively with French raider Esoterique from Newmarket and proved when fit and firing she is one of the best fillies at a mile in the world.
Quote from Chris Richardson, managing director of owner/breeders Cheveley Park Stud: “She is in good form, she looks well. I think she has done well physically since Ascot. It was very impressive that day. She is not an overly big, robust filly but she has certainly got an engine and a big heart.”
Sky Lantern – Best Price 2/1
It’s best not to get too carried away with the bare form of Sky Lantern’s performance behind Integral at Royal Ascot. Carrying a 5lb penalty and looking mighty unfit in the paddock, it was clear from everyone to see that she was crying out for the run, finishing a well-held fifth in the end.
The score between Integral and Sky Lantern reads 1-1 with Richard Hannon’s filly landing the Sun Chariot Stakes last season. Does she retain all of her ability? It’s a bit of a risk at 2/1 to find out.
Quote from Richard Hughes: “Her form’s better than Ascot.
“She was a little bit big, she’ll come on for the run, but she’ll have to.”
Rizeena – Best Price 4/1
One of three winners from Royal Ascot when fulfilling her potential when winning the Coronation Stakes under an inspired ride from Ryan Moore. However, the jockey is on Integral here and the form of the Coronation may struggle to hold up.
Quote from trainer Clive Brittain: “We couldn’t have been more pleased with her since Ascot and we think she has maybe improved a bit from there. She’s in very good form, her weight is very good and her work has been good so we obviously go there with a big chance.”
Verdict: It’s hard to see any of the outsiders troubling this quality threesome and the verdict has to be with Integral, who is an uncomplicated filly that is going the right way and is in form. That can’t be said at this stage about Sky Lantern.
