Monday’s Racing Tips: The Master can un-Lock the door at Southwell

No National Hunt racing today, thanks to the torrential rain, but there are two all-weather meetings to get stuck into – but this doesn’t faze Lewis Jones, who gives us a couple of selections at Southwell to attack….

When compiling any punting plan for a meeting at Southwell, course and distance winners should feature heavily in your portfolio.

The Fibresand surface is unique. Like marmite, horses either love it or hate it. Time and time again at the Nottinghamshire track, grand old course and distance winners return to form at Southwell after perhaps running below par elsewhere.

The Lock Master is a horse that relishes ploughing through the deep conditions at Southwell and looks the one to beat in the Ladbrokes Handicap at 3:10, despite trading as the second favourite behind Noble Citizen.

Mick Appleby’s charge is one of the most consistent performers currently in training when it comes to racing on the Fibresand, having made the frame 17 times from 23 appearances at the track.

That record may only include four wins and a rather frustrating 11 second places but he is on a mark today that makes him a confident bet to get his head in front.

He finished behind a very good yardstick for the grade in the form of Frontier Fighter, who gave arguably the best horse on the surface, Dubai Hills, a real run for his money to be beaten only a length in December.

That form is of greater substance than Noble Citizen’s win last week, where he accounted for today’s third favourite Tatting in an apprentice’s race. David Simcock’s charge has only won two of his 22 starts on the all-weather and shouldn’t be trusted at prohibitive odds to deliver.

Stick with the consistent The Lock Master at 5/2 and you won’t go too far wrong. Three point win stake here.

Ace Master also looks a decent bet at a working man’s price in the Download The Ladbrokes App Handicap at 2:40. Much like The Lock Master, he is a very consistent sort on this surface who just keeps finding for pressure when the race enters the danger zone.

A step back up to seven furlongs should be right up his street as Roy Bowring’s gutsy performer has scored twice over the course and distance. The 5/1 is worth a small one point win play.

Those that like to play the big price multiples are also encouraged to stick the two selections in a double with a one point win. It will pay 20/1 at the advertised prices.
