A huge week is in prospect with Punchestown and Newmarket on the horizon, but nothing tickles Lewis Jones’ taste buds more than a little Fibresand action from Southwell. He’s punting there today and has two selections for his followers to ponder….
You just can’t beat a day at the beach can you? The sand is set to fly at Southwell today. Just the way I like it.
Numbers are on the thin side for today’s meeting but that’s not stopped me digging deep into the form book. Thankfully, it wasn’t time wasted as I’ve come out the other side with two fancies for today. Hopefully, we can turn a profit like we did yesterday with Good Value at Kempton, who absolutely bolted up to justify his 5/2 price tag.
The best bet of the day is Sam Spade in the Win Big With The totejackpot Handicap (5:35). I’m not overly convinced by this horse’s ability on the Fibresand but this is a very weak handicap with two very beatable rivals with him at the head of the market.
General Tufto gets far too behind in his races while Bitaphon has struggled to win since being upped in the weights for a victory in November. This leaves the door open for Sam Spade, who smashed up General Tufto by three lengths a few starts back when winning over course and distance.
He ran only adequately last time out behind Red Invader but that race was above average in the context of the usual Southwell standard and today’s event is a step down in class. The vastly underrated Dale Swift takes the ride and his strength in the saddle may make the difference aboard the selection as his rival are all ridden by claimers.
Get on the 4/1 with two point win stakes.
The second selection is a little left-field and in all honesty could go horribly wrong or brilliantly right. There will be no in between. Fairy Wing is massively out of form but has the Fibresand credentials to strike at any time and he’s worth backing at 14/1 in the 2,000 Guineas Ante Post At totepool.com Handicap (7:15).
Course winners are like goldust around Southwell and this horse is now 8lbs below his last winning mark. There has been a little bit of money around for him this morning and if he’s primed for a big run, he may take all the beating here. Get on with a one point win stake.
