Monday’s Racing Tips: Allanard an awesome bet at Ayr

Anyone that wasn’t absolutely buzzing off the walls for the Cheltenham Festival before Saturday will be now. The narrative for the festival, which begins on March 11, has now taken shape after some of the big-guns played their hand at Cheltenham, Doncaster and Leopardstown. The standard of racing from Ayr today isn’t in the same league, but that hasn’t stopped Lewis Jones having a look through the card and he has picked out an 8/1 shot that he feels is vastly overpriced….

Going through the card at Ayr last night felt a little deflating considering the weekend of top-class and enthralling racing that we’ve just witnessed. However, one horse did light my eyes up and got my juices flowing in same way that the Cleeve Hurdle and Irish Champion Hurdle did.

The 8/1 price attached to the chances of Allanard in the Back Of The Net At Handicap Chase is pretty damn ridiculous when assessing just how well handicapped Martin Todhunter’s charge is.

The selection has dropped rapidly in the weights over the last year after some sketchy performances off what were very tough marks to get any juice out of.

Just seven starts ago, the game front runner was finishing second in a very good race for the grade at Newcastle off a mark of 121.

His form since has been pretty inconsistent but not enough to completely lose faith in his ability and it seems a rather generous ploy from the handicapper to allow this horse to drop to a mark of 104 for today’s race.

Allanard has winning form at Wetherby off a mark of 109 (won by 11 lengths in impressive fashion) and started off this season by finishing a good second behind the very well handicapped Rossini’s Dancer at Hexham off a mark of 112. If he runs anywhere near that form today, then he should have too much in the locker for a bunch of seemingly well handicapped rivals.

Market leader Settledoutofcourt, who has been supported into 6/4, is obviously the biggest danger but he won a very average race last time out and may be overrated in terms of his current mark.

Get on the 8/1 selection with a two point win stake.
