Monday’s Racing Tip: Off The Wall can strike for David Pipe

Monkerty Tunkerty’s solid run in the Sussex National to finish third kept the profit ticking over for in-form tipster Lewis Jones, who is now +28.14 in profit since this column was introduced in November. He has one selection for his followers today….

It’s really hard to ignore the claims of Off The Wall in Southwell’s 12:55, with trainer David Pipe boasting a sensational strike rate at the Nottinghamshire track when joining up with his stable jockey Tom Scudamore.

Off The Wall is Pipe’s only runner at the track today and rarely does the Nicholashayne team make a trip somewhere with just one runner if they aren’t serious about seeing a return.

Pipe and Scudamore have a 31% strike rate at Southwell in the last five years and this looks a horse that should progress nicely up the handicap this season.

He made a promising start to his chase career when third in a 2m5f novice handicap chase at Ffos Las last month on heavy ground, travelling eye catchingly into the race before failing to see out his race, probably for a lack of match practice.

That run is looking even more fruitful now after the runner-up Saroque won at Newbury two weeks ago and the winner Cruising By should also have little problem adding another win to his CV if he gets his ideal conditions again.

With the form being franked of his chasing debut effort then a mark of 110 looks very workable, especially in a race like this that lacks significant depth.

Market rival Shouldavboughtgold is the biggest danger but despite being talented he doesn’t look very straightforward and couldn’t be relied on to do the business at short prices.

He looked a certain winner last time out at Wetherby but threw the race away in the final few strides when he idled and let Clondaw Flicka burst through from nowhere to nab him on the line. He has gone up 7lbs for that effort, which also looks a tad harsh.

However, the market support is with Shouldavboughtgold but that doesn’t put us off the selection in the slightest, who can be backed at a juicy 9/4 when in our eyes he should be trading as the one to beat. Get on the Pipe runner with a three point win stake.
