Monday’s Racing Tip: Persevere with Pete at bulky each-way odds

Lewis Jones is at his second home today, Southwell racecourse, and has a big-price selection on his radar….

I would not blame you for reading this column today and thinking that I perhaps have gone a little bit mad following the losing run that we have endured over the last few weeks.

Today’s selection at Southwell is a horse that 12 starts as a racehorse as has been beaten an aggregate of 150 lengths and the best finish in his career to date was a front-running fourth at Wolverhampton last season.

On paper he is an absolute hound and his official rating of 43 very much mirrors that thinking.

However, what has triggered my interest today on this lowly rated runner is that this is Perseverant Pete is making his Fibresand debut today and the breeding profile and the make-up that could take quite well to the sand, especially off a mark of 43.

Despite being out of the handicap by a few lbs in the Quicksilverslots Play Your Favourite £500 Jackpot Handicap, the selection is well worth a small play at colossal odds. As we’ve touched upon, his form is rank but his breeding is very eye-catching for this dirt surface. He is sired by Johannesburg, who has an 18% strike-rate with his progeny on the surface, and he is out of a USA-bred mare.

His run style in his races to date also bodes well for a bold showing today. He has tremendous early speed and travels very nicely in his races. Two traits that are vital for horses when tackling the Fibresand as if you get caught behind here, your race is all but over. If the selection can repeat his performance from when he finished fourth at Wolverhampton behind the progressive Tatting, then it’s easy to see him playing a part in the finish. He also ran a better race than on first viewing at Brighton on his seasonal reappearance when he got very tired in the last 200 yards after being bang there from the outset.

Call me mad, send me abuse, but at 25/1 Perseverant Pete is a cracking each-way bet in my eyes. Three points each-way stakes advised.

*Unfortunately for price purposes a very respectable tipster, who has a huge effect on the markets on days like today, has tipped the same horse and the price has collapsed considering since I started writing the piece. The 25/1 is now nothing but a distant memory as the money has shrunk the selection into 12/1. Very annoying but then again, the horse has caught the eye of many shrewd judges, which is only a good thing.
