Monday’s Racing Tip: Exceeder can excel for Botti at Windsor

Lewis Jones is back to the daily grind of low grade racing after a stupendous Royal Ascot meeting. He’s feeling pretty dismal but hopefully a win for today’s selection will put him in a better mood….

Tipping-wise, it got worse as the week went on but on the whole Royal Ascot was its usual enjoyable festival of flat racing. It’s not quite Cheltenham, but for sporting excitement and punting possibilities it’s certainly up there as one of the highlights of the season.

The big disappointment of the week was the fact my strong fancy for the Wokingham Stakes, Sir Maximilian, who I advised punters to lump on well in advance of the race at 33/1, missed getting into the race by one spot. Stakes were returned but he would have gone very close from the draw he was allocated.

Moving on, and today’s looks a tough day to find value but we’ll give it go with small stakes on the agenda as the action comes from Chepstow, Lingfield and Windsor in the UK.

One trainer I like to keep a close eye on at this time of year is Marco Botti, who has a habit of finding progressive horses, usually three-year-olds, and takes them through the handicaps, winning everything in sight.

The Newmarket trainer has a 33 per cent strike-rate in handicaps restricted to the Classic generation in the last five seasons at Windsor and the lightly raced Exceeder simply has to be of interest tonight in the Daily Enhanced Place Terms Handicap around the 9/1 mark.

Botti’s charge has run respectably on both his starts this season, showing ability in both and has been dropped a 1lb in the weights despite the consistent efforts.

The three-year-old broke his maiden at Wolverhampton in October and went forward on that effort at Kempton in March when finishing a staying on fourth behind the well regarded Gone With The Wind. There were excuses last time when he was a big drifter in the betting on soft ground at Chester but he’s pedigree suggests that good ground will be more up his street so he can be forgive that effort despite staying on into fourth again that day.

Faster ground is on the cards at Windsor this evening and the very capable Martin Harley is in the plate. It will be a huge surprise if this one doesn’t hit the frame. Get on with one point each-way stakes.
