Monday’s Racing Tip: 9/2 De Blacksmith has more to give at Plumpton

Trainer Gary Moore likes nothing better than saddling a winner at his local track, Plumpton, highlighted by his 19% strike rate at the course in the last five years and there is every reason to think that his only runner today, De Blacksmith, can further enhance his fruitful statistics, says Lewis Jones….

The selection has caught the eye on a couple of occasions this season without getting his head in front and looks overpriced at 9/2 to land the SIS Live Novices´ Limited Handicap Chase at 3:00.

He made a promising start to life as a chase after switching from the hurdles game, where he won twice, including once at Plumpton, with a solid run behind the very well regarded Uxizandre, who went onto to win again and is now one of the market leaders for the JLT Speciality Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

The official winning distance was just a neck that day and although he was flattered by the proximity to the winner, who made a near race ending mistake two from home, the fact he pulled 26 lengths clear of the third Loose Chips has worked out rather nicely as the Charlie Longsdon-trained animal has come out and won since at Kempton.

With De Blacksmith’s run firmly in our minds we was a tad disappointed to see him not build on it at Lingfield next time out when beaten a long way by Toby Lerone.

However, there was much to like about his performance as he travelled well and looked set to play a part in the finish with two to jump but then his tank emptied, with perhaps the ground just too testing for his liking.

He unseated Colin Bolger at Newbury last time in a race won quite easily by today’s favourite Saroque but he can be forgiven that mistake and should be more at home racing around a track that suits his jumping style and on ground which is easing up by the minute.

Saroque deserves respect at the head of the betting due to the ease at which he won last time and because he is trained by the genius that is Venetia Williams, but, a 8lb hike in the weights just may find him out today against better handicapped sorts like De Blacksmith.

Get on the Moore runner with a two point win stake.
