Jim Crowley: Minnetonka is an exciting ride to pick up

Coral ambassador Jim Crowley has four rides at Newmarket on Saturday and he gave us the lowdown on each of them ahead of the meeting.

Newmarket 1.30 – Melodramatica

I rode this filly at Lingfield at the start of the year, we finished fourth that day. That was over a mile and she’s back over that trip here having run over 7 furlongs last time.

She will need to take a step forward to feature but her trainer Rae Guest doesn’t run his horses in races where they don’t have a chance and if she can transfer her all-weather form to the turf she could run into a place here.

Newmarket 2.05 – Minnetonka

Minnetonka was very impressive when winning on debut at Salisbury. She absolutely bolted in and I remember watching it and thinking “wow she looks pretty smart”.

That was on good to firm going so she won’t mind how quick it is here.

The form of that race hasn’t been tested much so far but she was so far ahead of them that day this has to be an exciting ride to pick up.

It’s a race the Hannon team know how to win and I would be hopeful she would go very close here.

Newmarket 2.40 – Something Enticing

I rode Something Enticing to finish second in a Listed race at Doncaster last back-end when trained by David Elsworth and she filled the runner-up spot on her most recent start at Goodwood last month for her new trainer Andrew Balding.

She can be slowly away and that’s what cost me at Doncaster. She absolutely flew at the finish but couldn’t quite get there.

This is only a small field so she shouldn’t have any trouble in running, it’s just a question of whether she is quite good enough or not.

Newmarket 3.15 – Laneqash

Laneqash ran an absolute corker of a race at Haydock last time and should improve for that first run of the season.

We didn’t get the clearest of runs that day and I’d be hopeful of reversing form with Pogo, who finished just ahead of us.

Sunray Major also looked a little bit unlucky that day and I think he’s our major rival here but I think we’ll go close.

It is telling that he was a horse Shadwell wanted to keep hold of when they had their dispersal and it would be great to repay that by winning this Group 3.
