Horse Racing Tips: Rhys Williams likes a stayer to break her maiden at Lingfield

Rhys Williams has analysed Tuesday’s racing and has a sole selection at Lingfield.

“If she can repeat the best of her form in France and Ireland then she can be competitive in this fairly weak staying handicap.”

Lingfield 13:30: Cabalgata 1pt win 22/1

Cabalgata has failed to win in seventeen attempts on the flat so far and returns from a long absence today but if she can repeat the best of her form in France and Ireland then she can be competitive in this fairly weak staying handicap.

She showed ability for various trainers in France, the last of which being Anne-Sophie Pacault for whom she was placed on four occasions in all-weather handicaps over 2m or 2m1f.

When in training with Pacault, Cabalgata was owned by John Halley and after pulling up at Le Croise-Laroche, Halley moved the mare into his care in Ireland. She shaped well on her first start for him over 1m4f at Fairyhouse, staying on well in the straight to finish fourth having been in second last turning the final bend.

She was comfortably held next time out at Bellewstown, when she made headway on the outside early in the home straight before that move flattened out late on.

Trainer: L J Morgan
Jockey: Shane Kelly
Age: 7
Weight: 9st 10lbs
OR: 58

The tongue tie and cheekpieces that she wears today went on two starts ago at Limerick and she ran very well to finish second. She raced at the back of the field for the first circuit before gradually making headway on the outside around the final bend. She responded well to driving in the home straight but couldn’t match Mandarin Monarch late on and finished second.

Cabalgata was never competitive on her last start in Ireland at Galway when beaten seven lengths and she’s been off the track since. She’s now moved to Laura Morgan, which I would consider a positive trainer switch, and makes her first start for her new yard in a moderate race.

It may be that she will need the run after the absence and she was starting to show increasing reluctance in the very early stages of races in Ireland which is clearly a concern but I can’t let her go unbacked at a big price in a race of this quality given the ability she’s shown and any 20/1 or bigger appeals.
