Friday’s Racing Tip: Last chance for Boston Bob – grab the 8/1

One tip. One winner. That was the story yesterday as tipster Lewis Jones continued his sensational form over the last few weeks. Silviniaco Conti’s win means this column is now £44.88 in profit. Let’s take a look where the money’s going today…
Boston Bob has been thought of as a top-class animal the moment he arrived at Willie Mullins yard and today may be the day where he finally puts it all together in the Melling Chase at Aintree.
Built like a heavyweight but with the agility of a 110m hurdler, this horse was backed off the boards in the Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle two seasons ago but only found one too good on the day in the form of Brindisi Breeze, who tragically died in a terrible accident two months later.
His season as a novice chaser was a strange one. After scraping home twice in Ireland, he turned up in the RSA Chase and led going into the final fence after making a sweeping move three from home in the style of a very good horse.
But he misjudged the fence horribly and came crashing down. Now, it’s hard to say whether he would have held on but he’s all stamina and he would have run all the way to line.
The fact that he could have beat subsequent Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere that day brings forward the potential this horse has when everything clicks.
This season has been a strange ride us Boston Bob followers. He began it with a very classy win in a nothing hurdles race in Ireland before getting stuck in the mud in the Cleeve Hurdle where he failed to show his best. That was supposed to be the end of the line in terms of my betting relationship with the horse, but the way he jumped and powered up the hill in the Ryanair Chase late on suggested to me that some spark may still be there in the frustrating chaser.
Today’s Melling Chase is one of the poorest renewals I can ever remember and it won’t take much winning. In terms of class, Boston Bob, on his day, is the best in this field by some way.
We’ll have to take a bit of a chance that everything falls right today but at 8/1 it’s well worth the risk, especially from an each-way perspective as he could even run into a place if not at his best.
