Friday’s Racing Tip: Global can Lead the charge at Musselburgh

Tipster Lewis Jones thinks the action from Punchestown is best watched rather than punted on today and has found a short price favourite to steam into from Musselburgh instead…

Global Leader deserves huge respect in the Baillie Gifford Handicap (5:10 Musselburgh) and is just begging to be backed at 5/4 to boost the bank balance for a big weekend ahead at Newmarket.

The unexposed four-year-old has improved massively over the winter since being given the chop and is mark has boomed from 49 to 61 after two facile successes at Wolverhampton on the Polytrack.

Paul D’Arcy’s charge flew home under hands and heels riding by eight lengths in a 7f handicap at Wolverhampton nine days ago and again landed the spoils on Monday under a 6lb penalty.

What was especially taking about his two wins were the different tactics applied on each occasion, making all from the front in his first win and then being held up from the back in the second. Good horses have the ability to win in all types of tactical races and Global Leader showed that at this level he’s a bit of a superstar. I see no reason why his progression can’t continue today at Musselburgh.

He has to carry a double penalty today and race on ground he’s never encountered before, however, his dam won on her only race on soft and his action suggests he should take to an ease in the ground.

D’Arcy’s horses are running very well this season and the money has been piling on the selection all morning. Follow the gamble in with three point win stakes.

The big clash of the day is at 5:30 (Irish Champion Hurdle) and it’s certainly a race to sit back and enjoy rather than have a bet in. Its Champion Hurdle hero Jezki up against former Champion Hurdler and four time winner of this race Hurricane Fly. Both horses can be backed at around 10/11, with outsider and supposed pacemaker Steps To Freedom the 50/1 rag.

There is real no logical way to approach this race from a betting perspective in my eyes. It has all the hallmarks of a five furlong dash for home and if that happens it’s a real lottery. Still, the clash will draw in a huge crowd and should be a great spectacle.

Good luck if you’re having a punt today.
