Friday’s Racing Tip: Give one more chance to Cloudscape to show his true colours

A horse that I’m willing to give one more chance to today is the very talented Cloudscape, who flopped badly when last seen on Guineas day at Newmarket.

John Gosden’s charge ran too badly to be true when very well backed on the Rowley Mile but ran a stinker behind Barley Mow. My philosophy is always to forgive him a bad run and 2000 Guineas day was a very strange day in terms of results. The formbook went out of the window and Cloudscape wasn’t the only horse to run badly on that strange Saturday when Night Of Thunder won the Guineas at 40/1.

Cloudscape’s form when winning a Newmarket handicap before the Guineas couldn’t be working out much better. The runner-up Windshear has gone onto win a Sandown handicap and finish second in the London Gold Cup behind the very impressive Cannock Chase. Even the third, Volume, who was beat a long way at Newmarket, went onto land a Listed event in classy fashion.

Cloudscape has a potent turn of foot on his day and should have too much toe for a bunch of rivals that perhaps lack the scope of this rangy sort.

Get on the 5/2 with a two point win stake.

Elsewhere, and all eyes will be on the Lloyds Bank Commercial Maiden Stakes at Newmarket (3:05) as the much touted Hydrogen makes his long awaited debut for Peter Chapple-Hyam. The horse was the most expensive yearling purchased in 2012 when he cost 2.5million guineas.

Owned by Qatari Sheik Fahad Al Thani, who has endured a frustrating time with Hydrogen, the horse is a son of Galileo and a close relative of Chapple-Hyam 2007 Derby winner Authorised and is still causing lots of enthusiasm on the gallops at Chapple-Hyam.

Sheik Fahad racing adviser David Redvers thoughts make interesting reading, especially in terms of an unlikely stint at the Derby. He said: “Hydrogen is working extremely well. Pete’s yard have long been divided which is the better horse. Arod has had a clear run and this horse has had two injuries, one of them quite serious when he kicked the wall of his stable and burst his hock.

“If he goes and wins impressively there is a very strong possibility he will take his chance in the Derby. I backed him for the race the other day on Betfair at 999-1.”
