Friday’s Racing Tip: Captain Cat to pounce at Goodwood

Lewis Jones has yet to officially strike at Glorious Goodwood this week but he has pointed you in the direction of two odds-on winners in the shape of Kingman in the Sussex Stakes and Ivawood in the Richmond Stakes. Hopefully today is the day the money is bang on as he runs his eye over a fascinating card on the Downs…

Another blank drawn yesterday with Angel Gabrial failing to see through his effort on his first start at Group level for trainer Richard Fahey. It was the old stager Calvarlyman that ran out the victor as he defied his aging limbs to hand Godolphin a brilliant Goodwood Cup success. He’s now off to the Melbourne Cup, where if he gets race conditions and the draw in his favour, he could be pretty hard to beat.

Moving on to today, and I’ve found two bets to follow on a cracking card at Goodwood. Course form is always worth noting around this unique track and that is a reason in itself to chance the returning Quest For Peace in the Group Three Coutts Glorious Stakes at 1:55.

He struggled when trained in Australia last year, but back with previous yard now; he’s leading contender if he could recapture the form he showed when winning this race and a 1m6f Listed contest on this track two years ago.

In both of those wins he was able to dictate matters from the front in a small field environment and the lack of a front runner here suggests that he may get that in his favour in today’s contest. Pether’s Moon is the market leader for the Richard Hannon yard but he’s not one used to getting his head in front and he can be taken on at 6/4 with the 6/1 about the selection.

Get on with a two point win.

Captain Cat is a horse I’ve been waiting to back ever since he showed a fantastic turn of foot to win the one mile contest on Lingfield’s all-weather championship day.

He’s been hiked up in the weights accordingly for that win but still is of interest on a track and from a draw that should suit his change of pace style. Trainer Roger Charlton has entered him up in a Group Two later this month and he’ll have to go close off this mark to make that entry worthwhile.

Get on with two point each-way stakes.
