Yesterday was very frustrating. Vallarta looked to be coming to win his race with a strong rattle down the outside at Yarmouth but despite hitting the front and trading at odds-on in running, he contrived to throw it away and was headed and beaten in the final strides.
Judging by that horse’s attitude in a finish, he’s very much one to stay clear of in the future now. An absolute monkey by the look of things.
Moving onto today, and moving on, and we’ve turned our attention to the action at Newcastle today, where it’s the second day of their very popular Northumberland Plate meeting.
The big day of action is on Saturday, but the Thursday and Friday cards always throw together some decent racing and tonight’s action is very tantalising.
The Betfred TV/EBF Stallions Hoppings Stakes is the feature race and that’s where my attention lies. It’s a race for three-year-old fillies on the upgrade and it has a habit of producing a nice type.
This year’s renewal can go the way of LILY RULES, who was last seen running in the Oaks behind the very impressive Taghroodha.
She was never good enough to play a part in the finish but her run to finish a staying on ninth in what should turn out to be a hot race makes her chances of winning this Listed event very promising.
Before her run in the Oaks she stepped up markedly for a step up in trip when chasing home Madame Chaing in the Musidora Stakes at York. She showed a very game attitude that day and trainer Tony Coyle has always held this filly in high regard over these kind of distances.
Both of her wins to date have come at Newcastle, including on good, and she seems to handle good to firm also. I get the feeling we haven’t seen the best of this filly yet and today looks the day she’ll put her head in front to gain that all-important black-type for breeding purposes.
Pelerin looks a smart prospect for Marco Botti as she slammed dual subsequent winner Crowley’s Law by three and a half lengths in a Thirsk handicap last month and she was unlucky to win at Newbury last time out too. However, she lacks the scope that Lily Rules possesses and at the prices she is well worth taking on.
Get on Lily Rules with two point win stakes.
