The Flat is back! Well, for a week anyway. Lewis Jones has had a delve into the card at the Curragh and has come out with a 12/1 shot to attack each way in the big betting heat of the day…
It’s a very strange time in the racing calendar. Cheltenham is now just a distant memory and most attention is now focused on the Grand National at the start of April.
However, in between, the Flat season also starts to pop it’s head out of the waters. Yesterday we had the Winter Derby at Lingfield – won by Robin Hood’s Bay – and today the Irish Flat racing season kicks off with their Lincolnshire meeting.
That’s where our focus lies for today’s tips as we try and pick some each way value in a notoriously difficult race.
The bookies go 11/2 the field with the two sexy profile horses at the head of the betting.
Shipyard looks very progressive and ticks a lot of the boxes but his inexperience may count against him. You also have to give respect to the Dermot Weld-trained Stuccodor, who is among the market leaders for the master trainer.
However, he looks high enough in the weights and is swerved on those grounds.
Those looking for a bit of each way value should take a chance on the 14/1 about Canary Row, who is a horse I have followed ever since he chased home Dawn Approach on his seasonal reappearance two years ago.
That form is in another stratosphere to what any of his rivals today have produced. There is an argument that Dawn Approach was well below his best that day but still to get that close to a 2000 Guineas was a very encouraging achievement.
He once again performed with credit at Listed level his first run of the season last year. It’s certainly best to catch him when he’s fresh as his form tends to tail off quite drastically over the course of the season.
This looks Canary Row’s level and the 10lbs taken off his back by claiming jockey Ben Dawson should also help his chance from a handicapping point of view.
Trainer Kevin Prentegast is a dab hand at preparing horse’s for a big handicap and faith is put in him to get the selection firing first time out.
Get on with a one point each-way stake.
