Espsom Derby Tips

Day two of Epsom’s Derby meeting gets under starters orders today at 2:00.

2:00 Investec Private Banking Handicap

The opening race is a 1 mile 2 furlong handicap. The local horse Emenem will have its followers in this race but the one I like is the John Gosden trained and Frankie Dettori ridden Tartini. This combination won the Oaks yesterday with Enable.

Tartini has shown a fair level of form this season in Derby trials. Dropped in glass now on handicap debut. I think TARTINI will prove tough to beat.

His proven course form will stand him in good steed.

2.35 Princess Elizabeth Stakes

The second race on the card the 2:35 is a Group 3 for fillies and mares. Laugh Aloud is the 5/4 favourite in this race and she deserves to be favourite.

She is clearly on up and up. She was very impressive last time out when winning in Listed class. She should take this step up to group level in her stride. The only doubt with her and most of these is the course. I think it might be best to find some value elsewhere in this race. Urban Fox showed a decent level of form as a two year old last season.

Things didn’t go her way in the 1000 Guineas last time out. I think that run can be forgiven. I can see her running a big race but the one I like is the Mick Channon trained and locally owned Epsom Icon. This horse is unbeaten at the track in two runs.

The last of them coming in this very race last year. She has not won since but the return to the track is sure to set her alight.

I think EPSOM ICON is a great each way bet at around 12/1.

3.10 Investec Diomed Stakes

The 3:10 is the Diomed Stakes which is a Group 3. Eight runners go to post for this race and everyone of these holds a good chance of winning.

Kool Company is the joint top rated in the field with Sovereign Debt. Kool Kompany won nicely on debut but disappointed since.

Soft ground is the key to this horse – There was heavy rain at the track yesterday but the going description is still good.

This horse would be the one to be on if the ground turns soft. Custom Cut is another who needs soft ground to be seen at its best.

This horse has had 4 tries in this race and has yet to win. I don’t think he’ll do it today either.

Sovereign Debt is still showed the enthusiasm now at the age of eight as he did when he was a two year old. This horse has won 13 races in his career with most of them coming in pattern class.

He has looked as good as ever this season and has won 3 of his last four starts,  was very badly hampered in this race last year when coming to win the race.

I think given a clear run today this horse will gain compensation. He gives most of the field weight but he’s classy enough to do so and win.

Ballet Concerto looks the up and comer in the field. I think he’s got a decent chance but SOVEREIGN DEBT is the one for me in this.

3.45 Investec Corporate Banking ‘Dash’ Handicap

The 3:45 on the card is the Epsom Dash is this always a great race to watch whether you’ve had a bet or not. It’s known as the fastest 5 furlongs in the world.

They sprint downhill for nearly all of this race and there can often be a lot of hard luck stories.

The draw can be very important in this race. Horses drawn high are drawn up against the stands rail and it can be the golden highway.

High drawn horses dominated this race last year. Horses drawn low are drawn wide and a slow start can often decide their fate early on. Horses drawn low with really good early speed can win this race though. Two of the last five winners were drawn in stall 1 and stall 2.

The draw suggests that you need to be drawn very high or very low. There is a lot of early pace drawn low so I can see a few of them such as Caspian Prince.

Blithe Spirit and El Astronaute tracking over given a good start. Bowson Fred and Exceed the Limit have good early pace of those drawn high.

El Astronaute showed blistering early speed when winning at Chester recently and I think both he and Caspian Prince will try and steal this race from the front.

El Astronaute has won 3 of his last 4, suspicion is that there might be better handicapped horses in the field today. Kimberella was a very unlucky 2nd in this race last year.

She is 17lb higher in the weights now though. The 7lb claim will help and she should be bang there again but it won’t be easy to go one better this year. Desert Law won this race is in 2015 over Boom the Groom. Boom the Groom is 2lb better off at the weights today based on that race.

Desert Law had a barren spell ever since winning that race though. He didn’t win a race last season but won nicely on return this season. He could be well treated on his old form if back to his best but a middle draw will make it hard to win this race.

Duke Of Firenze won this race back in 2013 and has been a decent sprinter ever since. His latest win at York was a career best at the age of eight.

Has a decent draw but his hold up style of racing might not suit this race. Boom The Groom was placed in this race in the past and ran a decent race last year in it from a wide draw.

The draw is much better this time round and I think he has a live chance at a big price. Caspian Prince has won this race twice in the past including when winning it front the front last year.

Given his great early speed stall 1 shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

He’s 1lb lower than last year win and he really does love it around here.

He had a great prep for this race last week when running mid div at York.

Both BOOM THE GROOM & CASPIAN PRINCE look overpriced at 18/1 and both are sure to run big races. They are both worth an each way bet.

4.30 Investec Derby (Group 1)

The 4:30 on the card is the one we’ve all been waiting for and it is the Group 1 Epsom Derby. This race is steeped in history and it is the most prestigious of the five classics.

This race has been won by great horses such as Lammtarra under the late Walter Swinburn, Sinndar, Galileo, High Chaparral, Sea the Stars and Golden Horn.

The question is who’s name will be added to that ring of honour today. 19 runners go to post for what looks the most open looking Derby in years.

The no hoper Diore Lia has been the main talking point of this race all week long. Gina Mangan was jocked off because of a lack of experience.

The ride will now be taken by Paddy Pilley a relative unknown. Hopefully this horse stays out the way and doesn’t cause any trouble. Lot’s of these and most of the Aidan O’Brien horses are very closely matched on form.

There is no one standout horse in this race on shown form so far but I do think we will see a great performance from one of these today.

The five that interest me are, Permian, Eminent, Cliffs of Moher, Cracksman and Dubai Thunder. Dubai Thunder is the dark horse of those five and the race itself.

This well bred sort was a runaway winner of a maiden on debut at Newbury 15 days ago. He looked then to be a horse to follow for the future but I was surprised to see that it’s next entry would be this race. Stepping from maiden class to the highest Group 1 level is a big jump.

The only horse I can remember winning this race with only 1 previous run is Lammtarra. It would be some feat if Godolphin were to win with this horse.

I can see it running a decent race but I think he’s one for another day. Eminent the son of Frankel was very impressive in two starts as a two year old. This horse race 6th in the Guiness on reappearance this season. He didn’t get the best of passages but he was beaten fair and square by Churchill.

The 4f step up in trip is a lot to ask in this race. Rhododendron who ran in the 1000 guineas was 2nd in the Oaks yesterday but it was clear that she did not see out the trip.

Eminent has a lot of raw ability and is sure to run a big race but I just think he might be found wanting at the finish. Cliffs Of Moher impressed me when winning at Chester last time out in the Dee Stakes.

He was asked for an effort 3f out and the horse responded greatly and got up to win by a length. The extra trip and longer straight is sure to suit today.

A horse called Bay of Poets ran credibly in three of the main Derby trials. He is not in the lineup today but he is a very good yardstick when it comes to the form.

The unbeaten Cracksman beat today’s rival Permian and Bay of Poets in the Derby Trial here over 1 mile 2f back in April. He travelled very strongly then and did well to win from his position.

He came upsides both Bay of Poets and Permian in the final stages of the race to win by a short head and 1 and ¾ lengths.

It was a very eye catching win and this John Gosden trained horse went into many people’s notebooks then. Cracksman missed his entry in the Dante Stakes which is always one of the best trial for this race.

That race was won by Permian who had today’s rivals Benbati and Rekindling in behind. Had Cracksman run in that race I think he would have won it.

It’s interesting to note that Bay of Poets was beaten 1 and ½ l by Cliffs Of Moher in the Dee Stakes. That form suggests that there is very little between Permian, Cliffs of Moher and Cracksman.

I do think though that Cracksman has the most potential and he could be much improved today than we saw when he won last. It’s going to be one heck of a finish.

I think Frankie Dettori and John Gosden can land the Oaks and Derby Double today with CRACKSMAN who carries the colours of Golden Horn who won this race two years ago for the very same connections.
