Shared can go from amber to green for Charlton
I often find Bank Holiday Racing difficult, and today’s action is no different across the likes of Bath, Beverley and Windsor. My preference is for punting a couple for the double by the river and Shared at 3/1 is favoured to get the better of Godolphin favourite Maplewood (who is 13/8) and should get the job done.
His debut came at Nottingham at the beginning of last month and not a lot was expected as he was allowed to go off at a whopping 69.02, but he finished third. A good effort considering the test looked a bit too sharp for him.
Indeed, he has plenty of stamina in his pedigree including Group 1 winner Confidential Lady, and Shared will easily get 1m2f to 1m4f, but his trainer Roger Charlton is sticking to the 1m test today and he might be able to get away with it.
At Nottingham they dawdled and went no pace, and while the speed figure was poor, it says a bit about Shared that he was able to get reasonably close as he would have needed a truer gallop and Maplewood didn’t convince last time out. Charlie Appleby can’t win everything now can he?
The Writer isn’t quite in the red zone yet with attitude
The closing race at Windsor is far removed from some of the quality on the day in a 0-55, but there a few serious contenders to the favourite The Writer, and while 6/4, he should be up to winning this.
Potentially he is tricky, but he has already been gelded.
The 3yo has been well supported in both of his handicap starts, and while he was done in-running at 1.42/5 at Wolverhampton and had plenty of time to go past the winner, I will give him the benefit of the doubt despite a bit of stargazing behind Captain Kane – a progressive horse at a low level.
From that race, the pace was even and they were reasonably well strung out, with The Writer clocking his fastest splits in the final two furlongs, so there’s no reason why he will not stay, especially as his dam out of Dalakhani with an influence for stamina.
It’s his first start on the turf, and his forward-going run style will certainly help at Windsor.
