Daily Racing Multiple: Rath can blossom for Rose in Newcastle double
The Eider Chase takes main billing on Saturday and Alan Dudman has an each-way pick in the big race included in his 83/1 Sportsbook double…
“He had been off for 399 days prior to his comeback run this season, and that looked a good prep and sighter with this in mind.”
Rath can shine for Rose in Eider
Back Rath An Iuir @ 11/1 in the 15:15 at Newcastle
Trainer: Rose Dobbin
Jockey: Craig Nichol
Age: 9
Weight: 10st 13lbs
OR: 131
Saturday’s big betting race of the afternoon is the Eider at Newcastle, and I am hoping all 16 runners stand their ground so we can use the Extra Place Special with five places.
The ground at the time of writing was good to soft, so without the heavy it won’t be as such a brutal test it normally is, but over 4m2f it still isn’t for the weak finishers.
One on my short list was Eclair Surf at 15/2, but the 11/1 price with the each-way option means I am going for Rose Dobbin’s Rath An Iuir.
He’s very much in the lightly-raced bracket with just three starts over fences and just four over hurdles. The cliche handbook can be consulted again as he has already had the look of a staying chaser, and off 131, I am interested to see what he can do granted a marathon trip.
Rose Dobbin’s 9yo won at the track as a novice hurdler and then preceded to win his first two starts over three miles and fences. He slammed Tanarpino by 10L at Carlisle by 10L, jumping fairly well and staying strongly. He was outpaced in that too, just like he did when landing the Gordon Richards’ novice at the same track that winter. His fencing looked very good that day.
He had been off for 399 days prior to his comeback run this season, and that looked a good prep and sighter with this in mind. Hopefully the ground won’t err too much on the good side, as all of his form has been in soft and heavy.
Tiger hungry for revenge
Back Hungry Tiger @ 6/1 in the 17:00 at Newcastle
Trainer: George Bewley
Jockey: Dillan Hurst
Age: 8
Weight: 11st 9lbs
OR: 93
Once again with the Extra Place Special and we can get four places for our second each-way pick in Hungry Tiger who has been knocking on the door without quite bashing it down.
On his old Irish form, he gave an indicator that today’s good to soft will suit as he landed a 2m race by staying on strongly in yielding ground when trained by Pat Griffin.
He has been mostly campaigned by his current trainer George Bewley over much further, and last time out at Sedgefield he finished fourth over 2m5f. However, his best piece of form came at Catterick when finishing second to Findthetime – who has since bolted up in a handicap from a mark in three figures and is progressive.
Hungry Tiger is down in distance and could have his ideal ground.
