Daily Racing Multiple: Baron to convert a good chance in 17/1 Sedgefield double

It’s Sedgefield for Alan Dudman on Sunday, who had a 6.8 winner yesterday but his second selection finished third. His two horses for today pay out 17/1 on a Sportsbook multiple…

“However, the time was a good one as the pacesetter Smart Lass bowled along for a good while. But Set In Stone made up plenty of ground in the straight and from two out, picked up the leader with ease.”

A very good staying performance from Mahler Mission got us off to a winning start at 6.86/1 yesterday, but Our Marty couldn’t justify the support for him in the market and could only finish third for our double quest. But we go again on Sunday.

Trainer Brian Ellison landed the big prize at Doncaster yesterday with Windsor Avenue winning over fences for Phil and Julie Martin, and the same silks can continue to grace the winners’ enclosure on Sunday with the rather frustrating Baron De Midleton.

Although he’s a horse who has a fair bit of in-running history.

He finished second over CD in November and had the race in the bag with a good jump at the last – only to fold up the run-in and get beat at price matched in-play of 1.061/18. That was his fourth defeat odds-on in-running and with six seconds from 11 starts over fences without a win, he does have a question mark.

But if ever a chaser needed blinkers on, this is it. So the first-time headgear is the big angle here. He acts on good ground and has dropped down to a winnable mark from 119 – his joint-lowest of his career.

Sedgefield seems to be his track as he landed a novice hurdle by a wide margin in his younger days and in two outings chasing, he has finished in the runner-up position. Of course he has!

Stone’s case looks strong

The final race at Sedgefield includes a mixture of older horses (a couple of veterans) and those with a bit more potential. The good ground could be a curveball for some, but Set In Stone had enough form on the Flat when racing on the level for a variety of trainers to make her of interest here.

She is also one of the last-time-out winners in the field following a pleasant victory when landing a mares’ handicap recently.

A beating of serial loser Gemologist from that Musselburgh success doesn’t fully tell the story, as Set In Stone travelled sublimely well to cross the line nearly 3L ahead. However, the time was a good one as the pacesetter Smart Lass bowled along for a good while. But Set In Stone made up plenty of ground in the straight and from two out, picked up the leader with ease.

Her jumping technique is good too as she doesn’t spend too much time over her hurdles. She looked ahead of her mark last time, so I am not worried about the 6lb rise.
