Varian can get in the mood with Pretty Polly win
A 5/1 winner for the column on Saturday but Dubai Love finished out of the money in the Thirsk Hunt Cup. Hopefully that second winner is coming and it’s an all Newmarket and all Roger Varian theme for Sunday, and we’ll kick-off with his Peripatetic for the Betfair Pretty Polly Stakes over 1m2f.
This is a race I’ve enjoyed in recent times, as Lah Ti Dar was a filly I had plenty of time for. Indeed, her trainer John Gosden has cleaned up with the Pretty Polly dice in recent years, but I am opposing the great man with a 9/2 chance.
Peripatetic made her debut last year and was very green, but followed up in October at Newcastle and beat a horse called Fonteyn – who subsequently finished second to Crenelle (today’s favourite). The third has won since too.
The time figure wasn’t strong from her Newcastle win, but it says a fair bit about her abilities as she holds entries in the Ribblesdale and the Oaks, so clearly she’s a future stayer. Also Newcastle’s stiff finish didn’t pose any problems despite the fact she had an issue with a shoe and finished lame.
She’s by sire Ulysses, who is throwing up some decent horses and she should have no problems with the step up to 1m2f today.
I’m sticking to the Classic guns with Ameynah
My ante-post selection of Coroebus delivered in fine style for success in the 2000 Guineas yesterday, and I flagged up two for the 1000 standing in for Tony Calvin on Tuesday. Aidan O’Brien’s Tuesday is one of them, and she is priced at 11/2, but Ameynah will be included as we also have the four places with the Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook.
I’ve watched her replay a couple of times since, and she has moved from 25s at the start of the week to 16s for today, and I still think she can run a massive race.
With only two runs under her belt, she didn’t look inexperienced when winning at the track last month at the Craven meeting. She was head and shoulders above the field in that 7f Maiden, and she not only seemed to enjoy the slightly quicker ground, she looked a big, powerful filly who has matured physically over the winter.
I flagged up in my Tuesday piece how impressed I was with her in and out of the dip. She was running all over her rivals, but into the dip and leaving it – which can often leave horses floundering, she ran her quickest sectionals 11.39 and 11.14. That latter one was at the 6f marker, which was impressive.
The stalls placed down the centre hopefully will lead them all to diverge in one group, as her draw in 12 is near side. Native Trail came from 15 in the 2,000 and finished second, so I won’t get too caught up in the draw.
It looks a strong Guineas, no doubt about it, but I am not sure sure about Tenebrism staying, and she’s the fav.
