Look to Hills to provide a Group 3 winner
Destiny Is All got on the scoresheet for yesterday’s column, but Family Ties wasn’t sharp enough for her first start, so we won’t cut ties with her from the multiple family just yet. Another informative day awaits at Newmarket on Wednesday, and we’re playing towards the head of the market for both picks.
The Group 3 Abernant at 15:00 pitches in a pair of 3yos and one hot juvenile from last season in Ebro River, who had drifted out to 9/4 from 7/4 last night on the Sportsbook.
He escapes a penalty for his Phoenix win last term as a rookie, but I have the feeling Garrus has got a big run in him – especially at twice the price.
His reappearance in the Cammidge Trophy last time didn’t go according to plan at all. He missed the break from the stalls and his trainer Charlie Hills said he tripped leaving, which in turn forced him further back than his intended ideal position. And once in the wrong place, it usually all goes “hands in air” as he was also denied a clear run in the closing stages.
The ground looked on the softer side of the official going description looking at the times, and the quick surface at headquarters today is a plus.
He didn’t run badly at Newmarket last term over the 5f in the Betfair Palace House Stakes behind Godolphin’s Lazuli (who has since won a Group 2). He missed the kick and wasn’t quite kick enough to deal with the minimum, but he holds form against some quality sprinters, but this is his level.
Business as usual for Appleby at HQ
Godolphin’s Charlie Appleby has one of his big guns in Native Trail out for the Craven, and the top trainer on the Rowley Mile from last term made it business as usual yesterday with two winners at HQ. Wednesday clearly could be another, and Tranquil Night looked a horse of merit winning at Kempton twice in novice company during the winter.
His victory over 7f there in February showed a bit of maturity for just his third start. He was hemmed on the inside and almost “stood up for himself” to get away from the cutaway, as he angled out. The second part of that sortie was impressive, as he had a gap between horses either side and he quickened up sharply. He found again too and stayed on ever so strongly, recording a most impressive 10.90 sectional three from home.
A previous front-running win at Kempton was more controlled, but he does seem strongest at the finish. A mark of 84 for his handicap debut sneaks him into this 0-85.
Switching to faster going should suit on pedigree, as will the step up an extra furlong.
