Wednesday Horse Racing Tip: Follow the champ AP McCoy at Catterick

catterickLewis Jones is putting his money down on the champ AP McCoy today at Catterick as he tips up two of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year contender’s mounts…

O’Callaghan Strand is the biggest price of AP McCoy’s four rides today at Catterick and we wouldn’t put anyone off having a dabble on his chances in the Book Now For 28th December Handicap Chase at 2:50.

Jonjo O’Neill strapping chaser relishes lively ground, which he’ll get in Yorkshire after the recent dry spell, and on his first try at three miles should improve plenty from what he has showed over shorter trips.

The seven-year-old, who has won twice on good summer ground in the past, began his season contesting a handicap chase at Exeter and finished a close first after travelling well for a long way but just failed to see his race out on the ground.

In all honesty, he ran a bit below-par next time out at Wincanton, where he was beaten a never nearer fifth but like at Exeter, the ground had gone far too soft for his liking and he raced like a horse that doesn’t produce his best jumping on rain-sodden underfoot conditions.

This is a step into the unknown in terms of trip but on good ground and off his winnable mark of 118, he’s worth a small tickle at 4/1 with Bet365 in what is a very open little contest.

Get on his chances with a 1pt win stake.

Many punters will be steaming into McCoy’s shortest price runner of the day in the form of Holywell, who won the Pertemps Final winner at the Cheltenham Festival last season, however his chances in the Beginners´ Chase at 1:50 make him a very vulnerable 5/4 shot.

He’s never struck us as a chaser in the making and lacks the scope to win this event.

A far better McCoy based punt lies in the Go Racing At Wetherby This Saturday Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat Race with Mr Shantu, who looks a great value call against the weak favourite On Tour, who is trading at odds-on this morning.

On Tour looks a stayer in the making and surely will struggle on the ground despite already winning a bumper while the selection ran better than the result suggest when finishing fifth at Sandown.

Another 1pt win is advised on his chances.
