Peter Cahill is coming down from his Cheltenham high and has turned his attention to the Aintree Festival.
The lipstick, powder and paint will be out in full force, and there’s a mouth watering card for the Festival opener to get stuck into.
Here are his tips for Thursday’s high quality card.
Selection: Sizing John 10/3
Sizing John and L’ami Serge are the only Grade 1 winners in the race, with the latter the second best 2 mile novice chaser all season. Sizing John’s been beaten 5 times by Douvan but there is no Douvan in this race. He chased that horse home in the Arkle at Cheltenham.
I think this Aintree track will suit him better today. Garde La Victoire would have a decent chance in this if based on his form this season. He was always off the bridle at Cheltenham until falling. It wasn’t a good sign given that this horse is a strong traveller.
If he can recapture his earlier form he would go close but the preference is for Sizing John. He doesn’t have Douvan to face here and he should get his head in front today.
20/1 Annie Power, Ivanovich Gorbatov, Cue Card Offer:
Selection: Ivanovich Gorbatov 6/5
Left a most disappointing run in the mud at Leopardstown behind when showing much improved form to land the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival for Aidan O’Brien. I think he’s better than the winning distance suggests.
Given he’s a Flat bred horse he will love this track and will take all the beating.
I can see him confirming the form with Footpad and Apples Jade. The main danger may come from the Paul Nicholls yard. There wasn’t much between Diego Du Charmil and Romain De Senam in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham.
Romain De Senam is 3lb better off with that rival today. He’s one that could go well at a huge each way price of 20/1.
Selection: Cue Card 1/1
I really fancy Cue Card for the race, he’s been a different horse this season. His win over Vautour in the King George is looking like good form now. Vautour destroyed them in the Ryanair at Cheltenham. Cue Card was unbeaten up until his fall in the Gold Cup.
He was traveling very strongly and was just about to take it up when he fell 3 out. A lot of people including myself believe he would of won that day.
Colin Tizzard is very bullish about his chances.
Aintree on good to soft ground is absolutely perfect for him, With a clear round he should take all the beating -Colin Tizzard
Im backing Cue Card to have too much pace for Don Poli today and I can see him beating Djakadam.
There’s no doubt he would’ve beaten that one in the Gold Cup had he of stayed on his feet. Cue Card is even money but I think he could go off odds on.
He will love the course and if he’s okay after his fall he should win this.
Selection: Nichols Canyon 9/2 E.W
Annie Power is sure to have her followers in this race.
The 7lb penalty could be the deciding factor yet again. She was very impressive when winning the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham but she is no value at 4/7 though. I’d rather have an each way bet on Nichols Canyon.
He was only 4l behind Annie Power in the Champion Hurdle. This flatter track and up in distance is sure to suit this former Flat stayer. This horse has been crying out for a step up in trip and I think it could bring about more improvement. He beat Faugheen at long odds on earlier in the season, there’s a chance he could turn over the fav again. I can’t see it out of the frame.
Selection: Major Malarkey 20/1 E.W
Major Malarkey ran a cracking race in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham.
He also ran a great race in this race last season. He got badly hampered and lost a lot of ground but did really well to run on into 4th at the finish. The trip today might be a bit on the short side but they will go very quick here and he has form over these grand national fences, not many in the race have run over these.
He’ll be staying on better than anything at the finish.
He has a lot of ground to make up with On The Fringe and Pacha Du Polder but I think he could grab a place late on. Some firms are paying 4 places.
I’m going to put up a Lucky 15 using 4 of my main selections:
Sizing John 10/3 1:40 Aintree
Ivanovich Gorbatov 6/5 2:15 Aintree
Cue Card 1/1 2:50 Aintree
Nichols Canyon 9/2 3:25 Aintree
